Pond aeration may be helpful in managing high phosphorus levels in a pond.  Phosphorus, as well as nitrogen, are nutrients that can stimulate aggressive and persistent algae growth which can be hard to manage.

Aeration increases oxygen levels in the pond water, and by doing so, may help to reduce phosphorus in several ways.

Higher oxygen levels support aerobic bacteria in the pond, which can consume, or sequester phosphorus.  As well, higher oxygen concentrations near the bottom of the pond, actually improve the binding of phosphorus, which can hold it in the bottom sediment where algae cannot use it for fuel.
